Evaluation of continuity sequence
Mise-en-scene
Mise–en-scene is what is used when thinking about what is
included in each scene, weather it be props, location, actors, costumes and
lighting. We have used Mise en scene in our short movie through out the
film
In this short movie we used some props, included some actor and it was filmed all in the same location, which was a deserted docking harbour. When planning the filming process we had to think carefully of what props we where going to use as we had to include a type of package exchange, so we decided to use cigarettes and lighters as the main props. The reason why we decided to shoot at the docks is because it was secluded area and we thought that this would help add an isolated feeling to the scene.
Lighting
Lighting is used in every film because with out light there
would be no effect within the production. There are many different types of lighting that can be used in productions a couple of types that are used often are shadows, spotlight and prop lighting.
When planning the film we wanted to add a black and white
filter to the whole shot but then later decided to keep the natural light as
the camera picked up some really detailed and high quality shots. The lighting
plays a big part of a production and I feel like that the lighting that we used
in this production was confusing as the narrative of the movie was of a sadden
emotion and the fact that it was shot on a sunny day it gives the movie a
positive vibe.
Camera angles
Camera angles are used in productions to create an effect
within that scene, every shot and camera angle is thought about carefully because
it can ever make or break the level of tension within that scene.
The camera angles that we used in this movie where leveled
which means the cameraman was leveled with the actor or with the whole shot in
general. The reason why we decided to keep the camera leveled was because we
wanted to create the effect as someone i.e. the viewer was witnessing the
crime.
Shot types
We used a variety of different shot types; in the first
scene where a male was walking we used a long shot that turned into a mid shot
and then a close up as he was walking closer to the camera. We then used a
reverse shot by flipping the camera to shot from the prospective of the man walking
to now see his back. We then shot a scene using a close up of one of the props
with the guy walking in the background using the shadow depth of field effect.
We then use a point of view shot of the girl walking towards
the prop, we also used a camera movement when walking towards to the prop. When
then finished the film by using a lot of close ups and over the shoulder shots.
An example of this is when the girl is opening the small box.
Sound
Sound is a big part of movies now a days and without of
sound it could possibly break a production, there are two types of sound that
are used when making a production they are diegetic and non-diegetic.
The sound type that we used was a diegetic soundtrack that
we got from a copy right free site, the reason why we chose the lost frontier
track is because we wanted to create a dramatic feeling throughout the duration
of the film. There was no speech in the movie so we kind of made a silent movie
because we had the soundtrack playing over the background noise as well.
180 Degree Rule
The 180 degree rule is used in mainly interviews but is used in films and other productions as well. The rule is basically that the camera can move along a semi circle route on the ground so it never crosses the axis of action.
We used the 180 Degree rule in the scene where the girl was looking out to sea as we moved the camera from her shoulder to the other. We decided to do this because we felt that it gave the scene the feeling of escapism.
Establishing shot
An Establishing shot is either a long shot or an extreme long shot, which introduces the audience to the setting or location of the scene. This shot is mainly used at the beginning of a film.
Which is exactly what we did with the first scene where i was walking in from a distance which shows the secluded location. We did this mainly to make the transition between the opening scene and the next a smooth one.
Point of view (POV)
POV shots are used a lot in horror movies as it creates a dramatic atmosphere for the scene. we used a point of view shot when the girl was walking towards the package. We did this to make it look as is she was nervous and to create tension about smoking be banned.
